On Slavery is a book by L. Cheves McCord which sought to defend slavery in the Confederacy not only morally, as past writers have done, but economically.

Introduction
"Slavery is truly and fairly a subject for the investigation of Political Economy... [it is] a system which it is recently the fashion to contemn, but which must now come boldly forward to claim its true place in the world’s development; and it is before the tribunal of Political Economy that it must claim this place, and prove the justice of its cause." My mother wrote these words in 1856, and not by even the slightest degree have they faded in truth or intensity in the years since. Slavery feeds the world. Slavery clothes the world. Slavery carries the world: and for this the world should be eternally grateful, yet what do we receive in return? Condemnation and harassment from the Yankees to the north and Mexicans to the south, and from all the mongrel peoples of Europe. Only their leaders are wise enough to see the value that slavery has brought to the world...

Chapter 1: On Rights
Man lives, but life cannot support itself, and only through the use of his faculties to appropriate and assimilate the elements of the world in which he lives can he, Man, preserve and develop his life. This basic fact cannot be disputed; anything more, for instance that it is God who bestows life upon Man, is a matter of faith. But God has provided much evidence for His existence. The same cannot be said for the too-common assertion that all men are equal or all men are born equal. "In what sense can this broad assertion be maintained as matter of fact? Or so stated as not to be liable to cavil and contradiction?"

Lamar was the son of Gazaway Bugg Lamar and Jane Meek Lamar (née Cresswell). He was the only child of Gazaway and Jane to survive the steamship Pulaski disaster.<ref name="wikipedia">Cf.
Having lost much of his fortune in the Panic of 1857, Lamar sought to regain it through slave trading. He applied to transport passengers from Africa on the ship Richard Cobden, but his cousin-in-law Howell Cobb, then United States Secretary of the Treasury, denied all three applications as he saw them to be a ruse to import slaves. Lamar responded by issuing an eleven-page pamphlet insulting Cobb.

When the War of Southern Independence broke out, he briefly served in the Confederate States Army, but did not see much action. After the war, with a loan from his father's Bank of the Republic and French investments, Lamar established a legitimate trading venture. Despite his former vendetta with his cousin-in-law Howell Cobb, he came to support him and his free-trade Cobbite faction against the protectionist Grabblers, as tariffs would have hurt his business.

Background
Winans' cigar ship
The famed Baltimore inventor and businessman Ross Winans developed a prototype submarine in the late 1850s.

Hunley's Pioneer
Horace Lawson Hunley from New Orleans developed a submarine called the Pioneer.

Collaboration
In 1863, following the disastrous First Tamaulipas campaign, the Confederate Congress sought to reform the Army and Navy. The famed inventor Ross Winans personally traveled from his home in Baltimore to Richmond to pitch his steam gun and "cigar ship" as well as other less-developed prototypes; Congress was excited to hear about the steam gun, but not so much about the cigar ship, which they regarded as a "mere curiosity." When news of Winans' speech to Congress reached New Orleans, Horace Lawson Hunley began advertising his Pioneer as a competitor. However, he was disappointed to learn that Congress was uninterested in Winans' submarine.

However, it got the attention of C. F. Hatcher, one of New Orleans' most prominent slave traders. He wanted to expand his business to compete against his competitors like Thomas B. Poindexter, who was then the wealthiest slave trader in the city.

History
Slave raids
The Treaty of Havana stipulated that Confederates would be prohibited from kidnapping freedmen and Unionists would be prohibited from helping slaves escape (targeting the Underground Railroad) and be obligated to return escaped slaves. The treaty's wording was vague and both sides continued to conduct their activities in secret. The Republican Party did not waste the opportunity to label the Confederacy as the "New Barbary" led by colorful and abominable figures as Nathan Bedford Forrest and Cal Lamar. The Democratic Party, which was more segregationist, did not publicly oppose the slave raids and some members even admitted to supporting them. There were also a number of covert, poorly documented slave raids in Caribbean nations, notably Haiti.

The situation worsened after the Christie Affair in Brazil. Though the affair itself had nothing to do with slavery, that it brought the United Kingdom to the brink of war with Brazil forced the former to lessen the enforcement of the Aberdeen Act in order to ease tensions.

History
Postbellum
During and after the war, anticipating the abolition of slavery and reprisal from Unionist and anti-slavery radicals, many slaveholding families from Delaware resettled in Maryland. In particular, they would help rebuild Salisbury, Maryland, which had been ravaged by a fire in 1860. Meanwhile, many black freedmen and escaped slaves moved to Delaware, such that by 1864 it was called "the blackest state in the Union." That same year, the state abolished slavery, thereby eliminating slavery in the Union. The Confederate intellectual George Fitzhugh visited Delaware during his tour of the Union and wrote about it extensively in his work Race Relations.

The 1870 United States census showed that Delaware's population had swelled from 112,216 (90,589 white; 19,829 free colored; 1,798 slave) to 162,621 (100,234 white; 62,387 colored). Though they were supposed to be well-integrated into Delaware society, the state simply could not handle the sheer number of black immigrants and many ghettos formed within and without cities like Wilmington and Dover.

__NOTOC__
When an article is large, it is often rewritten in summary style. This template is used below the heading of the summary, to link to the sub-article that has been (or will be) summarised.

Usage
<pre></pre>

You may also include additional links, up to ten in total:
<pre></pre>

For each link, you may optionally specify a link appearance (this is mostly intended for articles whose titles suffer from technical limitations):
<pre>{{main
|Article 1

Maryland is a state of the Confederate States of America. It borders the Confederate state of Virginia to the south and west, the Union states of Pennsylvania and Delaware to the north and east respectively (across the Mason-Dixon line), and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Its capital is Annapolis and its largest city is Baltimore.

History
War of Southern Independence
Maryland very nearly remained with the Union during the War of Southern Independence. A number of leading citizens, including physician and slaveholder Richard Sprigg Steuart, placed considerable pressure on Governor Thomas Holliday Hicks to summon the state Legislature to vote on secession. The rumor quickly reached President Abraham Lincoln, who was allegedly terrified that the Legislature would vote to secede and cut off Washington, D.C., especially after the Baltimore Riots, and so he wrote an order to Major General Robert Patterson of the Department of Washington (Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and the District of Columbia) to "detain those who would violate the integrity of the Union through their seditious sentiments." Patterson had already ordered Brigadier General Benjamin Butler, with the 8th Massachusetts, to open and secure a route from Annapolis through Annapolis Junction to Washington, D.C., and was to send the arrest order to him as well. However, the order ended up in the hands of Baltimore mayor George William Brown, who immediately took it to the press; when the 8th Massachusetts arrived by ship at Annapolis on April 20, the Lincoln Arrest Order, as it became popularly known, caused outrage across Maryland and led to the "Battle of Annapolis" where a mob / militia drove the 8th Massachusetts back to the sea.
