On Slavery is a book by L. Cheves McCord which sought to defend slavery in the Confederacy not only morally, as past writers have done, but economically.

Chapter 1: On Rights

...In The Law, Bastiat says that Nature or God bestowed Life upon Man and granted him faculties to appropriate and assimilate the elements into which God thrust him (Man). From Life, he says, springs the "right" to existence; from faculties, the "right" to liberty; from assimilation, the "right" to property.[1] Cooper is once again vindicated when he wrote that all laws of nature are mere useful systems of writers.[2]
